Seasonal enrichment of heavy isotopes in meltwater runoff from Haig Glacier, Canadian Rocky Mountains

چکیده
Glacier melt provides an important source of freshwater, particularly during dry years and late in the summer, after most seasonal snow has melted. Glaciers are losing mass world’s mountain regions, which leads to uncertainties around availability freshwater downstream catchments. While contributions glacial meltwater rivers can be quantified through hydrograph separation methods, changes chemical characteristics may impact these calculations. We collected samples supraglacial ice proglacial stream water over course a season at Haig Canadian Rocky Mountains analyzed for stable isotopes (oxygen-18 deuterium) dissolved major ions assess their variability. identify isotopic enrichment on surface as turns wet eventually bare that remains. This is reflected ratios stream. Two possible explanations include: 1) sublimation or liquid evaporation glacier surface, 2) fractionation diurnal freeze-thaw cycles, with heavier preferentially refreezing. evaluate both scenarios conclude processes likely active, effects sufficient explain much observed runoff.

Influence of high-order mechanics on simulation of glacier response to climate change: insights from Haig Glacier, Canadian Rocky Mountains
Evolution of glaciers in response to climate change has mostly been simulated using simplified dynamical models. Because these models do not account for the influence of high-order physics, corresponding results may exhibit some biases. For Haig Glacier in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, we test this hypothesis by comparing simulation results obtained from 3-D numerical models that deal with diff...
متن کاملPersistent organic pollutants in air and vegetation from the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
The exchange of chlorinated organic pollutants between air and vegetation in cold, mountain environments was investigated through the extraction of coniferous vegetation and high-volume air samples collected from the Canadian Rocky Mountains during the summers of 1999 and 2000. Concentrations of several compounds in vegetation increased as temperatures decreased, whereas atmospheric concentrati...
متن کاملClouds enhance Greenland ice sheet meltwater runoff
The Greenland ice sheet has become one of the main contributors to global sea level rise, predominantly through increased meltwater runoff. The main drivers of Greenland ice sheet runoff, however, remain poorly understood. Here we show that clouds enhance meltwater runoff by about one-third relative to clear skies, using a unique combination of active satellite observations, climate model data ...
متن کاملPrevalence of antibodies to canine parvovirus and distemper virus in wolves in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Wild carnivores are often exposed to diseases via contact with peridomestic host species that travel through the wildland-urban interfaces. To determine the antibody prevalences and relationships to human activity for two common canid pathogens, we sampled 99 wolves (Canis lupus) from 2000 to 2008 for antibodies to canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine distemper virus (CDV) in Banff and Jasper Nat...
متن کاملTopographic Associations of Lynx in the Southern Canadian Rocky Mountains: A Study
Snowshoe hares are considered the primary prey of Canada lynx throughout their range. Relative to northern populations, hares occurring in mountainous regions at southern latitudes are thought to remain at low and stable densities through time. Hence, the ecology of associated southern lynx populations is expected to resemble that of northern populations during the low phase of the hare populat...
